Not Just Another Book Club

Here is a wonderful prayer that I came across in a book of quotes – it certainly gave me pause to think.

‘In the name of Jesus Christ, who was never in a hurry, we pray, O God, that You will slow us down, for we know that we live too fast.  With all of eternity before us, make us take time to live – time to get acquainted with You, time to enjoy Your blessings, and time to know each other.’   - Peter Marshall, 1902-1949

In keeping with this thoughtful prayer – I challenge you all to relax with a book!  What better way to unwind than taking some time for yourself in this way?  Make a cup of tea (or coffee), find a quiet corner and ignore everything for a while. C.S. Lewis would agree.  He wrote, ‘you can’t get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.’   I have some great book suggestions for you. Click here.

Here is another wonderful quote:

‘When you reread a classic, you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in yourself than there was before.’  - Clifton Fadiman

My husband recently blessed me with a small copy of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.  It is such fun to reread this classic and to get my mind around all of the incredible vocabulary words she used.

Here’s something else that I found applied to my life – great words by Winston Churchill.

‘If you cannot read all your books, at any rate…peer into them, let them fall open where they will, read from the first sentence that arrests the eye, set them back on the shelves with your own hands, arrange them on your own plan so that you at least know where they are.  Let them be your friends; let them be your acquaintances.’

Going further back in history, Cicero, 106-43 B.C. was also a great reader it seems.  He said,

‘Read at every wait; read at all hours; read within leisure; read in times of labor; reads as one goes in; read as one goes out.  The task of the educated mind is simply put: read to lead.’

This quote made me think of some of my reading friends who are never without a book.  One of my friends reads at red lights and has taught her daughter to tell her when the light changes!

The final word in this piece goes to Anthony Trollope, 1815-1882 who wrote the following about this wonderful habit of reading:

‘This habit of reading, I make bold to tell you, is your pass to the greatest, the purest, and the most perfect pleasure that God has prepared for His creatures.  It lasts when all other pleasures fade.  It will support you when all other recreations are gone.  It will last until your death.  It will make your hours pleasant to you as long as you live.’

The ladies of South Attleboro Assembly of God’s own Sister Circle Book Club extend an open invite to you all.  Join us each month as we review a prayerfully chosen Christian fiction book.  We meet on the first Monday of every month at 7pm in the Youth Chapel.  Full details are in the bulletin, overhead and on this page each month.  Please email me, Joanne Wallace, with any queries.

This month the ladies are reading "Moon in the Mango Tree" by Pamela Binnings Ewen.

/files/images/moon-in-the-mango-tree-WEB.jpgSet in Siam and Europe during the 1920s, the glittering decade of change, The Moon In The Mango Tree is based upon the true story of Barbara Bond, a beautiful young ex-patriot and opera singer from Philadelphia who is forced to choose between her fierce desire for independence-a desire to create something of her own to give purpose and meaning to her life-and a deep abiding love for her faithful missionary husband whose work seems to create a gap between them. But when you choose between two things you love, must one be lost forever?

About the author:

/files/images/pam-ewen3.jpgUntil recently retiring to write full time, Pamela Binnings Ewen was a partner in the Houston office of the international law firm of BakerBotts, L.L.P., specializing in corporate finance. She now lives just outside New Orleans in Mandeville, Louisiana with her husband, James Lott. She has served on the Board of Directors of Inprint, Inc., a non-profit organization supporting the literary arts in Houston, and is on the Board of Directors of The Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society in New Orleans.
